All-American Invitational

The Angels play Thursday July 15- 5pm

Friday July 16- 10am

Saturday July 17- 3pm

(complete schedule is shown below)

The map above right shows a full-day road trip up Highway 5 to Portland.

The map at right shows the vicinity of Portland. The route in green shows the locations of the airport, the college where the games take place, and the alternative lodging.

The area has lots of summer activities to enjoy during  the full day between the second and third games.

Summary of Costs:

Tournament Fee $1,100

Airfares: $5,030

Lodging $1,848

Vans $880

Players buy their own meals.

Total cost by plane: $8,858.

Total cost by car: $4,128

By Air:

Depart Thursday, return late Sunday.

Duration: About 2 hrs flight + 3 hours in and out of airport.

We made two group reservations, one with Southwest and one with Alaska Air.

Southwest

Oakland to Portland, Thursday, July 15:

Flight 1121 leaves 12:20pm, arrives 1:50pm

Portland to Oakland, Sunday, July 18:

Flight 1733 leaves 8:35pm. arrives 10:15pm.

Cost to leave early in the event of elimination:

Each passenger tries to buy a new full-fare ticket back to San Francisco. Your original return ticket will result in a 75% refund by mail to the Angels.

Alaska Air

San Francisco to Portland, Thursday, July 15:

Group of 16- Flight 2470 leaves 6:30am, arrives 8:20am

Group of 10- Flight 201 leaves 8:26pm, arrives 10:01pm

Splitting the team into two groups means that a small squad plays the first game, the rest of the players arrive late Thursday for the remaining games. This is done because of the short week after the Santa Barbara trip might make it difficult to get a full squad out the door on Thursday morning.

Portland to San Francisco, Sunday, July 18:

Flight 2475 leaves 9:05pm. arrives 10:50pm.

Cost to leave early in the event of elimination:

The whole group exchanges their tickets at once, provided that early flights home can be found. There probably will be an added $75 per ticket fee added on, unless the early flight has the same price as the original Sunday night fare home.

Both airlines require a deposit by April 9.

Tournament fee is $1,100 due at the end of April.

Lodging:

Hampton is the official hotel of the tournament.

$77 x 8rooms x 3nights = $1,848.

The Hampton has swimming pools, free breakfast, etc.

The Golden Knight ain't fancy. It got nothing.

$50 x 8rooms x 3 nights = $1,200.

Ground Transportation (Portland)

Van rentals in Portland $130 x 2 x 3 days = $780

Gas 20 gallons x 2 x $2.50/gallon = $100

Maybe use one large van and two smaller vans.

Alternative: Drive to Portland and back:

Depart 5am Thursday, July 15, 2004

Return late Sunday, July 18, 2004 or when eliminated

Duration: About 10 hours, 650 miles.

In order to arrive in time for the first game at Mt. Hood Community College at 5pm vs. the Seattle Studs,

players would have to leave the Bay Area about 5am.

If the entire team made the trip by car, we would rent vans in San Francisco, save the airfares and van rental in Portland, and have an additional cost for gas.

Driving has the advantage of an early departure should we be eliminated early. On a group airfare, an early departure is difficult and expensive.

The advantage of a group fare over individual fares is that these early group reservations guarantee flights on Thursday and Sunday night, with name changes allowed two or three days before the trip. Waiting until July to buy tickets would be a big mess. Name changes are not allowed on tickets purchased individually.

Other alternatives: Half the team flies up and drives back.

Half the team drives up and flies back.

Pools

RED: Aloha Knights, Mountain Home Gun Fighters, San Francisco Angels, Seattle Studs.

WHITE: Humboldt Crabs, Kelowna Falcons, Kirkland Kodiaks, Portland Wildcats.

BLUE: Everett Merchants, Mt. Hood Cardinals, Portland Kings, Southern California Fire.
