Revised – 721/03 @ 9:30 am

<Font size 2pt>Start for Angels first game & Game #3 were doctored so that the Angels, who usually show up late, would think that the game started at 6pm when it really started an hour later. The Angels play better when they don't just step out of their cars. Besides, Friday is a terrible commute day, some players will spend the whole game trying to get through Fairfield. But now we've covered up our little ruse so no one will ever know.

Excerpt from email discussion by Steve Gill of Sacramento Legends, explaining how the tournament works:

"At the end of Friday, we will have eliminated 1 team, thus leaving only 6 in the tournament.  There will be 2  loser bracket games on Saturday morning consisting of 4 teams - only 2 will advance. There will be a winners bracket game early Saturday afternoon, regardless of who wins, they will both still be in the tournament leaving only 4 teams for the late Saturday matchups (which will be drawn according to the AABC rules). " In other words, pairings of the remaining four teams take place Saturday afternoon for Round IV, by following Rule 11(a).

A.A.B.C.

National Tournament Representation

Rule 11 (a). A.A.B.C. tournaments must be played in accordance and compliance with the approved AABC double elimination bracket; and deviations shall not be permitted under any circumstances. The AABC approved method of pairings follow:

The tournament shall be conducted on a true double elimination basis. Following the first three (3) rounds, pairings by draw may be necessary to comply with the following AABC rules:

  1. Where there is a bye in the schedule, all teams- undefeated and defeated- shall share in drawing for the bye except as provided in (3). No team may receive a second bye until every other team alive shall have a first bye. This will be adhered to even if it means two (2) teams must meet for the second time when there is a team alive they have not yet met. The bye has top priority over anything else and must be the first consideration. It is vital and essential that the bye be determined FIRST.

  2. No team will meet another team for the second time where there remains a different team left to play, UNLESS: a) it would violate (1) above, b) there are only three (3) teams left as provided in (3), or c) all possible combinations of games throw some pair of pairs of teams against each other for the second time will be selected and not drawn. If there is more than one equal possibility, the entire group of games will be selected by lot from those pairings with equal and fewest number of teams which must meet for the second time.

  3. When there are but three teams left in the tournament and each has received an equal number of byes or no team has received a bye and 1) one team has played the other two (2) teams and the other two (2) teams have not met, then the teams who have not met must play, and the other team will receive the bye in that round; or 2) one team has not met either of the other 2 teams, and the other two teams have met, the team who has not played either of the other two teams will draw it’s opponent, and the other team will receive a bye in that round.

  4. Winners will play winners and losers will play losers UNLESS it would violate (1), (2) or (3) above.

More State Tournament Rules:

email verbatim from Gregor Wakefield, tournament director, July 22, 2003:

To all State Tournament coaches,
I want to get as much information out to you as possible.  There are five things to get to you right now and there will be more later.

  1. Directions to the fields
     2. Supplying of baseballs
     3. Entry fees
     4. Rosters/Insurance
     5. Admission at Sacramento City College

1.  Directions to fields
If you have internet access - you can obtain directions to both Sacramento City College and Notolli Field by logging onto our league web site
at:      www.norcalsemipro.com

Click on the menu bar that says "directions".  Drag to the fields you need a map for.  Click on the little compass at the top of the
page. Click on "driving directions to this location." Enter starting address.  You can then print out directions from your location.

It would be useful for you to also print directions to each location, from each location in case you have to drive to another field.

...

2.  Supplying of baseballs
Please don't show up at the field on Friday without a case of (one dozen) baseballs (college level or above).  No high school baseballs. If teams show up without baseballs, the tournament will be short.  It is very hard to find baseballs in Sacramento. IF YOUR TEAM DOES SHOW UP WITHOUT BASEBALLS ... you will immediately have to pay $70 in cash to the tournament representative on site BEFORE you are allowed to participate in your game.  If that fee is not paid, you will be disqualified for failure to pay fees.

3.  Entry fees
All fees must be paid by money order or official cashier's check.  Fees are $325 and should be paid to the order of GREGOR WAKEFIELD to allow money to be turned over to pay for tournament costs.  There is no way to deposit personal checks and cash them over the weekend in time to pay the bills associated with this tournament.

DO NOT STICK PAYMENTS INTO THE REGULAR MAIL!
It is now Tuesday afternoon.  Payments would have to be made by next day federal express to arrive by Thursday.  If you haven't already mailed the payments, will have to have it with you when you arrive on Friday for your game. As with the baseballs - your team will not be allowed to participate in the tournament without fees being paid.  PERSONAL CHECKS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED DUE TO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES WITH TEAMS NOT PAYING!

4.  Rosters/Insurance
All rosters and insurance paperwork must be turned in prior to the start of the tournament.  You may fax them to my number at ..., or email them to this address.  Signed contracts must be brought to the field and presented to a tournament representative prior to your first
game.

5.  Admission at Sacramento City College
Admission will be charged to get into all games at Sacramento City College.  Admission at the gate for Friday and Saturday will be $4.00 per
person except for children 10 years and under - which will be free.  Admission for Sunday's championship round will be $5.00.   Tickets can be purchased in advance of the tournament at a reduced price of $3.00 on our website using MASTERCARD/VISA.  The online form will hopefully be available by tonight (Tuesday).
